Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy, 'Panoramic View of the Bay of Naples', about 1783-9 or 1810-15

About the work

Overview

This painting captures the city of Naples from high above. Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy painted this detailed view looking south-east across the bay towards the hills near Sorrento.

The view shows many well-known landmarks. On the far right stands the Castel Nuovo with its tower-like walls. Alfonso V of Aragon rebuilt it in the fifteenth century. A lighthouse rises up just left of centre. This building no longer exists. Some changes (or pentimenti) can be seen with the naked eye. They indicate that the artist changed his mind about where to place the building. A dome and tower fill the left side of the picture. They belong to the church of Santa Maria la Nova.

Dunouy loved how light and shadow played across the buildings and roof terraces. This style links him to the Welsh artist Thomas Jones. Jones was also working in Naples during the early 1780s. His brilliant work may have influenced the younger French artist.
