Berthe Morisot, 'Girl on a Divan', about 1885
About the work
Overview
We don’t know who this woman was, but she catches our attention immediately. Morisot gives her a wonderfully relaxed pose. We can notice how she leans against the armrest while turning her head the opposite way, creating a sense of movement. A slightly wry expression plays across her face. Perhaps she hears something amusing, or maybe she is lost in her thoughts. Her striking blue eyes seem even brighter against the matching background.
Look closely at her silver earrings with pearls. Morisot painted them so lightly that they shimmer on the canvas. Her dress has a ruffled collar and flared sleeves. The stylish cut tells us she was someone of social standing. Morisot captures the blue and orange pattern with just a few quick brushstrokes, yet these bold marks bring energy and life to the whole picture.
