Camille Pissarro, 'Portrait of Cezanne', 1874
About the work
Overview
This unsparing image shows the thickset figure of Cezanne. He sits in an upright chair and does not look at all comfortable. His face is weathered. His mouth is invisible under the tobacco-stained moustache and beard. Cezanne wears the garments of an artist working outdoors. He stares at something out of view that seems to make him want to get up and leave.
On the right is a caricature of Courbet, modernist painter and political activist. He leans forward as if encouraging Cezanne to paint in his own way. On the left a derogatory cartoon shows the conservative politician Adolphe Thiers. It confirms the rebellious political opinions of Pissarro and Cezanne.
Later, the two artists’ lives took different paths, but Pissarro never lost interest in Cezanne’s work. When he died in 1903, his Portrait of Cezanne was still in his studio.
