Frederic, Lord Leighton, 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna', 1853-5

About the work

Overview

Lord Leighton depicts Cimabue’s Madonna and Child as it is taken from his house and through the streets of Florence to the Rucellai Chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella. A group of Renaissance artists carries the painting on a trestle. Cimabue leads the way, walking hand in hand with his student and protégé, Giotto. The poet Dante leans against a pillar in the right foreground. On horseback is Charles of Anjou, King of Naples.

Civic leaders and stylish young men gather behind the trestle. Dancing children, musicians, an acolyte, priests and a bishop are on the left. A nursemaid on a balcony holds up a crying baby to see the painting. Cimabue’s devotion to Giotto touched a chord in Leighton, who was protective towards young, struggling artists. The painting is known as the Rucellai Madonna. It is now attributed to Duccio and is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
