Max Liebermann, 'Memorial Service for Kaiser Friedrich at Kösen', 1888-9
About the work
Overview
Mourners gather among towering trees for a memorial service. Tiny figures stand dwarfed by the forest around them. A sombre mood fills this woodland glade. Max Liebermann painted the scene in muted colours – dull greens and browns. Leaves and branches hide the sky above.
Liebermann set his painting in the Thuringian Forest outside the spa town of Kösen, near Leipzig in south-east Germany. People sometimes used this glade as a sort of natural church. The artist visited the woods early in 1888 and made several sketches and studies of the trees there.
Soon after, on 15 June 1888, Kaiser Friedrich III of Germany died, aged 56, only 99 days after becoming emperor. His memorial service was held in the forest. Although Liebermann was not there at the time, he reimagined the scene in order to make this painting.
