Paulus Potter, 'Landscape with Cattle and a Woman by a Stream', 1647
About the work
Overview
In the seventeenth century, Dutch farmers took great pride in their cattle. Paulus Potter was quick to realise the potential of depicting cows as almost iconic figures in an idyllic, if naturalistic, landscape. Painted when he was only 22 years old, this picture is Potter at his descriptive best.
A fine animal stands in the evening sun. The shadow of her curved horns is reflected on the warm golden-brown hide of her neck. Caught in the soft light, a woman squats by the stream. She is scouring a wooden bucket, perhaps preparing for milking.
This scene of rural life is framed by the reflections in the stream in the foreground and the flat Dutch plain behind it. Tiny buildings and towers are just visible on the horizon. This is likely to be the town of Delft, where Potter lived when he painted this serene view.
