Pieter Lastman, 'The Rest on the Flight into Egypt', 1620
About the work
Overview
This vibrant painting shows the Holy Family resting on their journey to Egypt. Matthew’s Gospel tells us Joseph was warned in a dream to flee with Mary and baby Jesus to escape King Herod.
The baby looks at us with a wise expression, his head ringed with golden light showing he is God’s son. Joseph holds out an apple to Jesus. This fruit links to the Garden of Eden story. Christians see Jesus as the ‘New Adam’ who brings life where Adam brought death.
Green trees and rocks surround the family, with a stream nearby giving them fresh water for their trip. A thistle plant refers to the crown of thorns Jesus will wear during his crucifixion. Pieter Lastman used light and dark cleverly, making Mary’s blue robe stand out. His skill shows in every detail, from smooth baby skin to rough bark. The artist signed and dated his work ‘P Lastman 1620’.
