spacer
Rolph Scarlett (1891-1984) was an Abstract artist best known for his geometric, abstract paintings and avant-garde jewelry. Born in Canada, he began working in his teens as a jewelry designer and fabricator. While he was working for his uncles jewelry business, Scarlett became interested in Modern and Abstract Art during a visit to New York in 1913, when he saw the work of Wassily Kandinsky at The Armory Show. Throughout his career he produced oil paintings, many works on paper, and unique sculpted jewelry, as well as modernist-style industrial and furniture designs. Scarlett rarely signed or dated his paintings. His work is held in several public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Montreal Museum of Art, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
